Debt Refinancing and Extended Public Comment on Schools Agenda

VIERA, Florida - At tonight’s Brevard Public Schools meeting to consider school closures and other budget reductions, school officials will “provide information about opportunities for the School Board to refinance portions of the District's outstanding debt,” according to the BPS agenda.
The meeting commences at 5:30 pm at the Educational Services Facility in Viera.
The school board will also hear from Mitch Owens with RBC Capital Markets (RBC), who will present a review of current economic conditions along with an update on the treasury and debt markets.
Dr. Brian Binggeli, Superintendent, and Judy Preston, Associate Superintendent of Financial Services will speak on behalf of BPS.  The school system needs $30.7 million in cuts to offset the ending of an added property, set to expire in July.
Also, since school closure discussions have drawn large crowds at previous meetings, BPS has issued special rules for public comment for tonight’s meeting.
“The Regular Business Meeting for the School Board of Brevard County will begin at 5:30 p.m. During this portion of the Board Meeting, the public commentary segment will be limited to (10) speakers on non-school closure related items. Each speaker will be allowed three (3) minutes to speak.

At the recess of the Regular Business Meeting, the Board Chair will open the Public Hearing regarding proposed school closures. The format for Community Input will be: One (1) representative or representative group from each of the proposed schools will be allowed an extended period of time to present additional comments and/or recommendations to the Board of Education. This will total four (4) total presentations.

For community members whose concerns are not covered through the extended presentations an additional ten (10) speakers from each affected school closure will be allowed two (2) minutes to make new and/or additional recommendations to the Board of Education for a total of forty (40) speakers.

Please note: All speakers must register to speak in advance.”
On the BPS agenda is specific consideration to close four schools: South Lake Elementary, Clearlake Middle, Gardendale Elementary Magnet, and Sea Park.  Also, agenda line items include the elimination of corridor busing to choice schools and adding a fee to choice and out-of-area applications.
