MIHS Mustangs Advance in State Football Post-Season

Mikey Owens hauls in a TD pass from Nick Smith.

The Merritt Island Mustang football team advanced in post-season play with a 28-0 win over Jensen Beach at the O-Dome on Friday night.  They travel to Glades Central next week for Class 5a Regional Semifinal.  Merritt Island is 10-1.
“One down and four to go,” Coach Jeff McLean told the team after the game. “But we take them one at a time.  No one thought you would be here – but you. We’ll work hard this week and good things happen when you work hard.”
After a scoreless first quarter, the Mustangs took the lead 7-0 following a 51-yard touchdown run by quarterback Nick Smith.  Dylan Barnas kicked the PAT.
In the second half, Merritt Island extended its lead with a seven-play 55-yard drive that ended with a Smith to Mikey Owens four-yard touchdown pass.  Barnas again added the PAT.  The drive began after a 16-yard punt return by TJ Torbert.
On the night, Smith was 9-19 for 97 yards and two interceptions.  Owens had three receptions for 43 yards.
Then, with 0:28 seconds left in the third quarter, Taquon Kelly blasted up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown run.  Barnas added the PAT to make the score 21-0.  This play was set-up with an interception by Dom Vincent.
Finally, at 11:53 in the fourth quarter, Johnny Batch had a “pick-six” touchdown with a 27-yard interception and return for a score.  Barnas went 4-4 on extra points.
Defensively, Josh Zirkle led all tacklers with eight and two sacks.  Ty Schwab had six tackles and Jake Armstrong had five.
